General strike 1905

The general strike and the revolutionary movement in Russia hade weakened the position of the "old regime" to the extent that the tsar Nicolai II on the 30.7.1906 had to ratify the new constitution of The Grand Duchy of Finland. By the new constitution the old 4 chamber parliament was replaced by the most modern parliament in Europe. The parliament was organized in only one chamber with universal and equal right to vote.

The first elections under the new constitution held in March 1907 made it clear that the workers movement now was part of the political power. The social democratic party got 80 representatives to the new parliament.
The authority of the parliament was however limited by a new all-Russian legislation adopted 30.6. 1910 that made the legislative work of the parliament of the Grand Duchy impossible in practice.

The new tendencies where threatening the autonomy of the Grand Duchy and met with resistance. It was generally feared that Finland was slowly becoming a Russian province.
