The piece of Tartu in 1920

Establishing peace in the region became urgent on both sides of the border and 14.10 1920 the peace of Tartu was signed.

The treaty confirmed the old borders except for the Pechenga (Petsamo) area, which was ceded to Finland.

By the Treaty of Tartu in 1920 the Pechenga was annexed by Finland. At the beginning of the Finnish period. When nickel ore was found. Pechenga experienced a rapid construction phase. The number of inhabitants in Pechenga was tripled during the 1930s. Despite the peace treaty the turbulence along the border continued with occasional armed conflicts. In 1923 a new treaty was signed and a 30 km broad border zone was created.
