The Winter war 1939 - 1940

The negotiations1939 in Moscow aiming to normalize the relations between the Soviet Union and Finland, were disrupted by the Soviet Union. Stalin was aware of the closeness of a capitalist country and wanted to make sure the Leningrad was secure by gaining some land from Finland. The Finnish side thought the conditions offered by Stalin were unacceptable. On November 26, the Russians staged an "incident, an alleged Finnish artillery attack, at Mainila on the Karelian Isthmus.
The result of these circumstances was the Winter War.

On November 30, 1939, three months after the start of World War II Soviet Union attacked Finland. As a consequence, the Soviet Union was expelled from the League of Nations on December 14th. Stalin had expected to conquer the whole country by the end of 1939, but Finnish resistance frustrated the Soviet forces, which outnumbered them three to one.
